January 20th the Oregon Ryegrass Growers Association held its 49th Annual Meeting.
Here are some highlights from the meeting:
- Larry Venell, from the Oregon Ryegrass Growers Seed Commission, noted the increase use of ryegrass in winter for erosion control in the Mid-West. Larry also reported on the research to possible suppression of the Soybean Cyst Nematode by Annual Ryegrass as a cover crop.
- Bill Young, OSU Extension Seed Production Agronomist, summarized and highlighted all research conducted in Annual Ryegrass over the past 20 years.
- Matt DeWall presented the ORGA service award to Eric Bowers of Bashaw Land & Seed for his work in the Oregon seed industry.
- William Humphrey, President and CEO of Citizens Bank, related the banking industry’s perspective in the current challenging economic times. William noted the “wealth effect” caused by the run-up of home values and how this new found home wealth has influenced the amount home owners were willing and able to spend and mortgage. Also noted was the current state of banks and how the regulatory branch of government is driving the banking industry to tighten lending. He suggested that, for the next year, cash is going to be your friend and stressed the importance of switching any variable rate debt to a fixed loan if possible.
