CPS Plot Tour - June 2nd

Tanner Sheahan
CPS Tangent

Last year many of you came to our wheat variety, fungicide, and growth regulator trials off of Hwy 34.
2010 Wheat Plot Tour
We are going to host the same type of plot tour this coming Thursday, June 2nd at 3:30PM.

We have several different wheat varieties as well as growth regulator and fungicide plots.  We will also go over some of the details of wheat storage and stored gain pests.  I'm pretty sure we'll have some refreshments of some kind as well.

Talk with your CPS fieldman about the plot tour and we'll see ya there!

Rusty Wheat?

Cameren Moran
CPS Tangent

I believe that everyone has seen rust in wheat around the valley so it isn't an uncommon subject. But i have some information some might find interesting.

Pat Boren and myself planted a variety trial this year similar to what some of you got to tour last year. We noticed some rust early on and i did a thorough evaluation of the varieties in February. We planted 7 different varieties of wheat on October 10th. and did an early rust evaluation on Feb. 8th. I found rust in 6 of the varieties.

Joe Cacka, and Paolo Sanguankeo CPS agronomists did another evaluation on May, 9 to see how the plants and rust is developing. The plots where sprayed on March, 17th with a shot of fungicide so we had over 7 weeks for rust to develop out of the fungicide and the evaluation was of the 2nd leaf from the newly extended leaf (flag leaf hadnt completely emerged.) Here are the results...

As you can see there is a lot of rust which is obvious around the valley. I thought these were good graphs to look at for everyone in order to compare varieties.

Ask your local CPS team if you have any questions.

Variable Rate Fertilizer Application

Bob Schroeder
CPS Tangent

got variability?

For over a decade, CPS in Tangent has been soil sampling and addressing the variability in the many soil types here in the Willamette Valley.  Variable rate lime applications have become a standard for many growers.  For some, with the increasing costs of fertilizer, and the ability to variable rate apply other nutrients there has been increased interest and application of the major nutrients.  New to CPS and the growers we serve, Lakeside Ag Ventures, LLC of Albany has begun offering variable rate applications with their new Dave Gilmour built dual bin dry applicator.  Veteran applicator Dave Nofziger captains the spreader with GPS guidance offering straight rate and variable rate applications to Willamette Valley growers.  If this is a service you are interested in, contact your CPS crop advisor to schedule your soil sampling needs, whether they be grid samples, zone samples, or smart samples and arrange for Dave Nofziger to complete the job.

The month of May is a great time to start preparing your yield monitor for the 2011 harvest.  In the event that you need to replace a battery, service the monitor or replace impact plates, taking care of this in May gives you time to be prepared for harvest.  Following is a checklist to help you prepare for the collecting and storing of yield data.

  • Check mass flow sensor plate for wear and replace if necessary.
  • Check moisture sensor fuse.
  • Check wires for rodent damage.

  • Check the GPS receiver and cables, renew subscription if needed.

  • Calibrate distance, header height, swath width, vibration calibration.
  • Copy and Clear data from your memory card.
  • Change and/or create field names for the memory card.

I found this website today with some pretty good imagery of the flooding in the Mid-West.  Just thought I'd pass it along.
